WHERE MUSIC COGNITION MEETS PERFORMANCE

After graduating from Los Angeles College of Music in Vocals, Angie Donkin began working in bands as a singer while also studying and teaching about music cognition and the neurological effects of music in a cultural group setting. This work inspired her to explore conceptual live productions with multi media art. She used this as her vehicle to create conceptual performance art at Unknown Theater in Hollywood from 2007-2009.

Under the Covers, Dolore

A specialty musical performance art piece by Angie Donkin, Under The Covers, Dolore takes the audience on a journey through the inner workings of the human psyche.

Performed through a character named Angel Black-Orchid, Under The Covers, Dolore was a fully immersive and interactive performance art musical featuring audio, visual, and tactile experience. Through radical acceptance in a social setting, we daringly challenged the confines of modern societal norms by encouraging instead to trust in one’s own subjective inner truth, guidance, and wisdom. By listening to the powerful messages we receive from our pain, fears, and past experiences, inner peace, and harmony can ultimately be attained.

The foundation of this show was the shadow aspects of the human psyche. The experience took the audience on a journey through the inner workings of the human psyche. Featuring songs, skits, soundscapes, and colorful lighting, within an immersive and interactive storytelling setting, the audience was encouraged to rediscover their own “inner experience.”

Guests were positioned comfortably on pillows forming a “half-moon shape,” with offerings of spring water and apple passed around on a tray for all to share. The audience was not forced to stay in their seats and instead were encouraged to interact with themselves, one another, and Angel Black-Orchid. Communication during the show was welcome in all forms, however, with specific avoidance of using “spoken words.”

This show created a safe environment where one could enhance one’s abilities to explore telepathic and alternative tools of expression like chanting, dancing, eye gazing, singing, yoga, crawling, meditation, or non-verbal emotional responses.

“A truly innovative piece that inspires introspection, while somehow feeling both therapeutic and entertaining at the same time. If you are looking for something outside of the box, in the moment, and on the cutting edge, this is the real deal.”
